Palace of Minos
CRETE, Minoan Culture
--The legend: Minos was king of Crete who ruled from a palace in KNOSSOS, the islands's capital. The Minotaur (half man/bull) was the son of the king's wife and Poseidon's bull. The Minotaur lived in a labyrinth, a maze. (Later, the palace at Knossos would be called a labyrinth or "house of the double axes"). To keep monster appeased, Minos ordered Athenians to pay tribute tax of 14 young men & women yearly. Theseus, son of Athens king Aegeus, killed the Minotaur with lover Ariadne's sword.
--We can't read their early writing ("hieroglyphics" & "Linear A") but their later writings ("Linear B," a very early form of Greek) have given us some insight into the culture.
--The raised building is the renovated part.
