DESCRIPTION: ARCHAIC PERIOD - DORIC style - 1.First style of architecture developed in Greece 2.Columns: Fluted. First made of wood (impermanent) then marble. Original wood columns were trunks smoothed with an "adze" creating ridges,or flutes. 3.The Architrave (horizontal band above columns) has a DORIC FRIEZE, a decorated band with alternating TRIGLYPHS (projecting blocks w/ 3 grooves) and METOPES (flat areas). 4.Triangle at top is called a PEDIMENT. 5.Doric descended from Minoan. Dorians were 1st settlers on mainland.
