DESCRIPTION: 490 BCE: Persian Darius marched thru Greece and was defeated @ Marathon. Phiddipides ran to tell everyone.(origin of our word "marathon"). 480 BCE: Darius' son, Xerxes, determined to avenge Darius' death, destroyed sacred bldgs. on Acropolis. Parthenon later re-built in Classical style.
