King's Purse Cover - MIDDLE AGES
King's purse cover - c.650 CE - ENGLAND - from the Sutton Hoo burial ship. A good example of metalcraft they produced in Middle Ages: small; gold enamel; animals (a revival of animals in art that the classical period didn't use: not since the Etruscan period.); symmetry with mirror images;AND INTERLACEMENT: complicated linear woven and knotted designs w/ complex patterns. These were a people of constant warfare and on the move. They made smaller more portable stuff. Christianity and pagan religions co-exist now. Only priests read. It was a life of incessant labor.
