DESCRIPTION: IMPERIAL PORTRAITURE - Marble - Rome - 325 CE. Constantine won civil war that ensued after Diocletian retired. Constantine had a vision the night before the battle: he saw flaming cross and heard the words "In this sign you shall conquer." (IHSV) Had army's shields inscribed with monogram XP (Chi and Rho - standing for Christos and/or Pax?). Made Christianity legal, and official religion of the Empire.
