Relief #1 - mixed media on embossed paper - 27" x 27" framed
This series of small works on paper served as inspiration - with this particular piece the direct catalyst - for my large 5' x 5' painting called Change, Interchange, and Relief. I began each work on paper by embossing a single 10" square using a Conrad press. I was taken with this elegantly quiet, raised square, and became interested in pursuing how it might be engaged in multiple ways using an abstract, minimalist approach and a limited color palette. Through the application of paint and various media, and through a pressure or force exerted on them, my works on paper had literally undergone change. I came to see these changed pieces as a metaphor for the human condition in response to pressure, change, interchange, and relief.
