ARCHITECTURE - Banqueting Hall - BAROQUE PERIOD IN ENGLAND
by INIGO JONES. Jones introduced Italian Renaissance style of architecture in England. Influenced by Palladio's books, he came up with a CLASSICAL design. Jones was 1st architect using anything outside Celtic-Germanic design, and opened architecture up to the Italian Renaissance. BANQUETING HALL is room in royal Whitehall Palace, used for royal entertainment. CLASSICAL in this sense is a combo of Greek and Roman: 1.pediments over windows, roman round and Greek triangle. 2."shelves" on top w/ roman swag 3.emphatic string courses. Ceiling painted by Rubens (no slide to show)
