PAINTING - Debarkation of Marie de Medici at Marseilles - BAROQUE PERIOD IN FLANDERS
RUBENS. PORTRAIT commissioned by Marie de Medici (Queen of France) as a cycle of scenes from her life. He has exaggerated the scene and idealized her. Symbolic figures: Neptune, sea nymphs, caped man = France; "fame" flies overhead blowing trumpets. Epitome of Baroque exaggeration. This kind of symbolism not seen in Protestant art.
