DESCRIPTION: Basilica in Rome. FACADE by MADERNA. DOME: MICHELANGELO. PIAZZA: BERNINI. Originally built by Constantine in 4th century. Maderna designed modern facade. Used Santa Susanna as model. Took 150 yrs. to build. After Maderna died, Bernini - foremost sculptor of period in Italy - replaced him and designed Piazza. The obelisk = style of the time. Many ancient Egyptian monuments in Rome because Roman Empire included Egypt and the Romans looted them and brought monuments back home.
