Meeting of Solomon and Sheba. Gates of Paradise. Ghiberti. EARLY ITALIAN RENAISSANCE
Detail of biblical panel from Gates of Paradise, East doors of Florence Cathedral Baptistry of San Giovanni. Relief sculpture. Ghiberti invented revolutionary way of making relief sculpture optically natural spatially, creating depth: 1ST to invent SCULPTOR'S AERIAL PERSPECTIVE. Foreground carved very deeply = ALTO-RILLEVO. Middle ground carved less deep = MEZZO-RILLEVO. Background carved less deep = BASSO-RILLEVO. Farthest back carved so shallow it's barely scratched = RILLEVO STIACCIATO. Note the scene's Gothic cathedral = too contemporary for biblical times, so it's considered AHISTORICAL.
