DESCRIPTION: Michelozzo was student of Brunelleschi. He beat Brunelleschi in this competition. Brunelleschi's design was too elaborate. The de Medicis wanted a "palace" more like a house. The custom was to build walls out to the very edges of the property. Features of this design: 1) Three levels. 2)Stone finish is different on ea. level. Levels are more refined as they ascend: bottom=rusticated; middle=smoother, brick-like units; top=very polished. 3)Emphatic STRING COURSES (lines between levels) 4)Very deep roof cornice overhanging.
