ARCHITECTURE - Palazzo Rucellai, Florence - EARLY ITALIAN RENAISSANCE
by Leon Battista ALBERTI - Architect wrote book re: ideal proportions. Thought "central plan" ideal & column/arches were incongruous and wrong. Responsible for decline of arcade which had been around since Romanesque period. Rucellais were patrons. This is their palace. Alberti combined 3 houses into one. Reminiscent of the Palazzo Medici- Riccardi by Micholozzo BUT: 1)stonework is all the same here instead of diff. on ea. level. 2)based on "grid" of horiz. strong courses and vertical pilasters. 3)cornice doesn't hang over as much 4)No round arches on bottom level (post & lintel)
