TITLE: SCULPTURE - Pieta - HIGH ITALIAN RENAISSANCE
DESCRIPTION: by MICHELANGELO Buonarroti @ 23 yrs of age. Polished marble. St. Peter's, Rome. GHIRLANDAIO TAUGHT 13 yr. old MICHELANGELO briefly. Then Lorenzo de Medici invited him to his palace and Michelangelo developed his own style based on all the art and sculpture he saw there. Pieta is so young looking. Why? Michelangelo says that a virgin stays young and doesn't age. He carved his name across diagonal band when he overheard someone mistaking the sculpture for another's work. Christ is elongated. Not "manneristic" yet but heading that direction. Detailed anatomical features, veins etc. M. lived to age 89.
