TITLE: SCULPTURE - David - HIGH ITALIAN RENAISSANCE
DESCRIPTION: by MICHELANGELO. "Veduta" = typical view (frontal). CLASSICAL. INTENT: for city of Florence, as public art. City State of Florence had stone nobody would cut (15' high) & offered it to Michelangelo. He made 13' statue. Said he could "look at the stone and see the man within". Didn't trust math - trusted eye only. COMPARE 3 DAVIDS: Donatello's young, nude boy and Verrochio's young, bold soldier both pictured AFTER victory over Giant (see Early Ren. #16 & #38) with Michelangelo's modest young man, classical nude, BEFORE the fight with Giant, poised with sling shot, TENSING BEFORE THE ACTION (Michelangelo famous for this technique).
