NEOCLASSICISM = revival of classical form in art. INTENT: to educate and elevate people from personal concerns and into the affairs of the state. Very representational; not subtle; easy to figure out; deals w class; subjects sometimes masquerade as contemporary issues.
JACQUES-LOUIS DAVID (pronounced Dah-VEED) = called "Robespierre of the Brush" c/o his participation in French Revolution, 1789. Won Prix de Rome after 4th try. Terrible loser (tantrums), small, inarticulate, violent man. Painted Prix de Rome pix the rest of his life. Adapted himself to period of the time. Got power. Was political manipulator.Everything he painted had a moral: "put aside concerns for yourself and do the right thing for the state".
