BENJAMIN WEST. EARLY WORK. Primitive style c/o no training in classical subjects suitable for painting. Example of ARCHAIC NATURE OF AMERICAN ART BEFORE INFLUENCE OF EUROPE. David also did a "Death of Socrates" (see Neoclassicism #02). This one is a-historical in same way (Roman arches & Greek subject). WEST eventually went to Royal Academy in London and rose to become 2nd head (after Joshua Reynolds (see Baroque Period in England #22).
