DESCRIPTION: BIERSTADT. HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL (Cole's successors). PAINTER OF GREAT WESTERN LANDSCAPES. Born in Germany. Came to US but went back to school in Dusseldorf where he learned to paint dramatic romantic subjects. Brother Charles a photographer. Had expeditions West together. On return, Bierstadt painted enormous landscapes of West. Mountains aren't true to fact - more like Swiss Alps. Tiny Indian camp (sublimity?). Center of interest is lit section in middle ground.
