PAINTING - At the Moulin Rouge - POST IMPRESSIONISM
TOULOUSE-LAUTREC. Lautrec a wealthy Parisian living the life of the "demi-monde" (night life with prostitutes in cafes). Printer in era when poster ads in vogue. Called "the Heir of Daumier" in field of graphic art. Like Daumier he develops front figure, then less middle and not much background. Admired Degas. Never moralizes, just shows actual scene like it is. Moulin Rouge = "red mill". Simplicity of form and line.
