DESCRIPTION: GERICAULT. FRANCE. HISTORY PAINTING. Chronicles the ship wreck scandal & survivors on raft awaiting rescue. Critical, yes but more about the DRAMA = romantic! Took 1-1/2 yrs. to paint. Exhibited it and chged admission. Painting was a sensation. Died a rising star at age 32 in riding accident (romantic even in death!). Buried in Paris cemetery Pere Lachaise. Tombstone bears relief sculpture of this painting. Other Revolutionary artists who set the pattern in art history who died young: Masaccio-27,Georgione-32,Carravaggio-37, Watteau-37.
