DESCRIPTION: EL GRECO. Baroque Period in Spain characterized by 2 streams of art: 1) extreme realism 2) extremely devotional. El Greco typifies both (even tho this particular image is a landscape). A Greek from Crete, he studied under Titian and Georgioni in Venice, then went to Toledo, Spain. Art influenced by NeoByzantine & late Italian mannerist styles. Both styles use elongation and so does he. Painter of drama. Landscape comes from Georgione and Titian's influence HOWEVER El Greco's landscape is NOT ARCADIAN (perfect, heavenly - see Georgioni in High Renaissance #62). This is stormy, sinister with disturbing kind of light reminiscent of MANNERIST STYLE.
